Chapter 2: A Glimpse of Hope
Chapter 2: A Glimpse of Hope
The next afternoon, Johnny walked home from school, his head down as he kicked at the cracks in the sidewalk. Another day of feeling invisible. Another day of getting through class without raising his hand, of sitting alone at lunch, of avoiding the kids who whispered about him.
He was used to it.
But as he turned the corner onto Main Street, something made him stop.
There, in the window of the local pet shop, was a small beagle puppy, black and white with floppy ears and big brown eyes. Its little paws pressed against the glass, its tail wagging furiously.
Johnny froze.
For a moment, everything else faded—the noise of passing cars, the weight of his thoughts. It was just him and the puppy, staring at each other through the glass.
The beagle yipped, tapping its paws against the window.
Johnny felt something stir inside him, something he hadn’t felt in a long time.
Hope.
He pressed his hand against the glass, watching as the puppy wiggled with excitement. A small smile tugged at Johnny’s lips.
Could he… could they actually get a dog?
He knew he had to ask his mom first.
A small wave of doubt crept in. What if she said no? What if they couldn’t afford it?
The beagle barked again, as if telling Johnny not to give up.
He took a deep breath, gripping his backpack strap tighter, and started walking home with a new sense of urgency.
Tonight, he would ask.
And maybe—just maybe—things would start to change.
