Chapter 6: Changes in Johnny
Johnny never realized how much a dog could change a person.
Before Snoopy, he had spent most of his time inside—playing video games, listening to music, avoiding the world.
Now, he was outside every day.
Mornings meant waking up earlier to take Snoopy for a walk before school. Afternoons meant running through the park, letting Snoopy chase leaves and bark excitedly at passing squirrels. Evenings meant snuggling up on the couch together while doing homework, Snoopy’s little head resting against his leg.
But the biggest change?
People started noticing him.
At the park, other dog owners smiled at him as he passed by. Some even stopped to talk.
“What a cute beagle!” a woman said one day, kneeling down to pet Snoopy. “What’s his name?”
“Snoopy,” Johnny replied, still getting used to the idea of talking to strangers.
“Ah, like the cartoon!” she laughed. “That’s perfect.”
Johnny smiled, a small warmth spreading in his chest.
And then, something even bigger happened.
One afternoon, Johnny was at the park with Snoopy when he heard a voice behind him.
“Hey, cool dog.”
Johnny turned to see a boy around his age, holding a leash attached to a golden retriever.
“Thanks,” Johnny said, giving Snoopy a quick scratch behind the ears.
The boy gestured to the retriever beside him. “This is Max. He’s crazy, but he’s my best friend.”
Johnny glanced at the dog, who wagged his tail eagerly.
He hesitated, then asked, “Do you… come here a lot?”
“Yeah,” the boy replied. “Almost every day after school. You?”
“Just started,” Johnny admitted.
“Well, maybe we’ll see you around,” the boy said, smiling. Then he threw a ball for Max, who took off running.
Johnny watched them go, his heart pounding.
Had he just… made a connection?
As he looked down at Snoopy, who was wagging his tail happily, he realized something.
For the first time in a long time, he wasn’t just getting by.
He was becoming part of the world again.
And it all started with a boy and his dog.
